Will there be a Thaipusam at Batu Caves this year?

by CJCM on January 21st, 2008

Batu Caves is where all the actions are when it comes to Thaipusam in Kuala Lumpur. The popular place among the Malaysian Indian devotees will always be packed with people from all walk of life, causing traffic jams in all directions leading to Batu Caves. Foreign tourists who happen to be in Kuala Lumpur during this Indian festival will also not let go the opportunity to visit one of the Kuala Lumpur attractions and see for themselves kavadi-carrying devotees and coconut breaking ceremony, just to name a few.

However, will Thaipusam festival at Batu Caves be the same this year? May be… or maybe not. According to what I have read in Malaysia Today, Thaipusam at Batu Caves very well be a very much quieter affair this year if what is being suggested in the letter to Malaysia Today takes place.

Malaysians together, let’s send out the message loud and clear to the Ruling Administration and to the Temple Authorities that we can no longer be pimped by the small scraps that get our thrown our way.

It has officially been declared a Public Holiday for Thaipusam, for Federal Territory and Putra Jaya. Why has it take 22 years for this announcement to be made? Do you recognise the complicity, merely to win the ballots this election?

Word has spread among the Indian Community to boycott the Thaipusam celebrations at Batu Caves, we hope that the significance of this boycott will reach out not only to the Temple Authorites but also to the ruling regime. Malaysians, it is time for ALL OF US to stand united and ensure that we make this Boycott a success. Don’t let apathy and complacency take over us, for this is what the administration wants from the people.

If you are Malaysian Indian living in Kuala Lumpur, we would like to know if you will boycott the Thaipusam at Batu Caves this coming Thursday 23rd January 2008. Even if this post finds you well after the Thaipusam, please let us know if you have boycotted the celebration at Batu caves or not by leaving your note in the comment area.

yes I have boycotted thaipusam at batu cave this year. Just saw the news on aljazeera, the crowd was very small compared to previous years. Im fact the stairs leaving up to the temple were almost as normal as during weekends. People did not need to push and you could see empty spaces in between unlike previous years.
