UM secret survey that is not anonymous
People normally would not respond to any survey that are not anonymous for many reasons which I would not want to discuss here. But have you come across any survey that are not anonymous? I haven’t… until I read today’s Malaysiakini report about UM’s supposedly secret survery but not anonymous. According to the report, the survey requires the students to fill in their personal details, parents’ names, occupation and monthly earnings… all of these information are already in the university’s computer system database.
What is interesting is the highly political nature of the survey. Within the context of prevailing Malaysian higher education system, I dont think this survey will reflect the true opinions of the students. It is well known fact that students in tertiary institutions are governed by the infamous Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) which prevents them from getting involved in politics, and this is what makes this survey interesting… or rather questionable.
If the UUCA prevents the students from political involvement, how is it then possible for the university to ask these poor students about their political preferences? Wouldn’t that invite trouble to the student themselves especially for those who have inclination towards the opossition parties?
Obviously, the survey has everything to do with the upcoming general election, but whatever else the authority wants to achieve out of this survey, rest assured that the results would no reflect the real sentiments by the students for fear of being reprimanded, no thanks to UUCA.
Ten political personalities have been shortlisted and it is up to UM hostel students to choose their idol through a compulsory survey.
Survey respondents were ordered to place scores between one to 10, with ten being the highest next to the names of the 10 personalities based on how much they are ‘interested (minati)’ in those individuals.
Respondents are also required to fill in their personal details, parents’ names, occupation and monthly earnings. Other questions asked in the survey were highly political in nature.
For example, students were asked to explain their understanding of Islam Hadhari, or civilisational Islam, a concept mooted by the current prime minister.
Another question asked respondents to write about the “influence” of opposition parties on students.
The respondents were also asked for their opinion on whether the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA), a strict law which bars political participation of students, ought to be amended or preserved.
Other questions related to campus politics and had asked respondents on their views of the pro-government student faction (Aspirasi) and the anti-establishment Muslim Students Association (PMI).
