It is now confirmed. Anwar Ibrahim will be charged in court tomorrow, 7th August 2008, for sodomy offence. It will be a much awaited event as Anwar is now expected to contest in a by-election for the parlimentary seat of Permatang Pauh.
The seat had been vacated by his wife Wan Azizah who had been holding the forte there since Anwar was sacked, also for sodomy allegation by Mahathir, way back in 1998. I think by now, the whole world are convinced that this second sodomy charge against Anwar Ibrahim is yet another fabricated issue to stop Anwar’s return into politics. The whole drama, just like the first sodomy case many years back is full of inconsistencies and controversies… but laughable even by kids standards.
First, Najib said he never met Saiful Bukhari. Then he said he did meet Saiful Bukhari but that was on scholarsip application matters…. never mind the fact that Saiful Bukhari is a college drop-out after performing badly in his tertiary study.

For all those who think that Anwar should swear in the name of Allah using the Quran to prove his innocence, you are definitely barking the wrong tree. In this sodomy allegation case, Anwar is not required to prove anything. The sodomy case is similar to adultery (zina) case. The onus is on Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the accuser, to prove his allegation.

The US Government now comes into picture as reported by Malaysiakini:
The United States said today it would oppose any politically motivated investigation or prosecution of Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim facing fresh sex misconduct charges.
[....]“The main point for us is that the rule of law needs to stand above politics,” said Tom Casey, spokesman for the US State Department.
“And we would certainly oppose any use of law enforcement or judicial procedures for anything other than legitimate purposes of the law,” he said.

The plot thickens in Anwar Ibrahim’s second sodomy allegation, this time by Anwar’s special aide Saiful Bukhari. Fearing for his safety, Anwar is reportedly taking refuge at the Turkish embassy in Kuala Lumpur. How would that affect Istanbul-Kuala Lumpur relationship remains to be seen. Would Wisma Putra file an official complaint to the Turkish Ambassador for inteferfering in Malaysia’s internal affairs? That will have to be a ‘wait and see’ for now.

In 1997, Anwar Ibrahim was sacked from the government by Mahathir allegedly for sodomy, found guilty in 2000 and sentenced to a six-year jail term. However, in 2004 the sodomy conviction was overturned and reversed by the Federal Court, the highest court, and Anwar was subsequently released.
