]]> Dataran Merdeka is historically significant where the Union Jack was replaced by the Malayan flag for the first time at midnight August 31, 1957. In modern days Malaysian history, Dataran Merdeka is also not less significant where various anti-government demonstrations were held here and other areas nearby for various reasons, but I doubt if those events will ever make it into the Malaysian history books.
