PC dealers under the spotlight in Kuala Lumpur

by CJCM on May 7th, 2007

Microsoft Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry had announced today that their undecover enforcements officers will be posing as buyers to nab computer dealers selling PCs pre-loaded with counterfeit software. The operations will kick-off in Klang Valley first and will gradually be extended nationwide.

How will this affect the sales of the PCs especially for the home consumer market? If enforced rigorously and strictly, I certainly believe the sales of PCs in Malaysia will be greatly affected. It is common that PCs sold to consumers are installed mainly with pirated Windows OS and Microsoft Office anywhere in the world. While I appreciate the fact that there is a copyright issue at hand that needs to be resolved here, I think Bill Gate should also do his part to encourage more people to buy original software by lowering the prices to a much lower level for home consumer market. After all, Microsoft is already filthy rich so lowering the software prices to a much more affordable level for consumers will not only increase the sales, but also in the end make Bill Gate a lot more richer in the long run.

Otherwise, a completely brand new modus operandi will eventually be devised by the PC dealers to play cat and mouse games with the enforcement officers. We are talking about Malaysia Boleh here… if you know what I mean.
