Pak Lah declared Thaipusam a public holiday for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya
Pak Lah has declared Thaipusam as a public holiday for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya. Malaysiakini reported 15,000 Malaysian Indians had attended the gathering at the Cheras Badminton Stadium earlier today, as a show of support to Barisan Nasional and MIC.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who was greeted by a thunderous standing ovation when he appeared, announced in his speech later that a public holiday will be declared for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya for the Thaipusam festival.

For records, the Indian community had been requesting for Thaipusam to be a public holiday for a long time since the Mahathir era, but the request had not been granted.
I wonder if the recent Hindraf’s rally had anything to do with this decision that gives good news not only to Malaysian Indians, but also all Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya folks of all races. What about other states Pak Lah?

The Thaipusam holiday, being extended to Kuala Lumpur & Putrajaya, is good news in principle but bad news (due to its short & sudden notice) to those who will have their appointments (including medical) being disrupted without any early indication or warning.
The national economic cost/loss due to this ‘lightning’ unexpected public holiday will also be difficult to figure out accurately.
