Nila Tanzil vs Malaysian Tourism Minister: A different perspective

by CJCM on March 15th, 2007

Nila Tanzil in PutrajayaMy post about Malaysian Minister’s calling bloggers liars had been getting a lot of hits and attracted some comments from readers. But a comment from one Fatima really make me thinking… hmm… how come I never thought of that.

What I mean was that, Fatima had offered her analysis from a totally different perspective. While she doesn’t dispute about the remarks made by the Tourism Minister, she clearly questions whether what had been raised by Nila Tanzil is justifiable.

One point Fatima had made is that, Nila Tanzil is NOT a journalist…. prompting Fatima to argue further that what Nila Tanzil had gone through is no big deal really as many journalists experienced that kind of predicaments all the time. And journalists normally do not take the matter as seriously as Nila Tanzil had made it.

Hmmm.. interesting analysis… What do you think? To me, whether Nila Tanzil is journalist or not, making such a big deal out of the incident does not really matter. The issue here is, a lot of people are not happy because a Malaysian Minister had acted unprofessionally by calling ALL bloggers as liars and implying further that 8,000 of 10,000 unemployed bloggers are women… hence women bloggers are liar. Now, where is the statistical proof to back his claim? Should a Minister say such a thing? I let you decide. The discussion goes on :)

Everyone who read Nila Tanzil article in Maverick’s Blog, must suspect that Nila was “Programmer” that travelling show.
BLUNDER!
Nila only a freelance presenter - not journalist - who was hired for 6 months.
Her task in this agenda only speaking in front camera, with script that was made by the Producer.
Related all of them were composed by the Producer.
My opinion, Nila was shock and most startled, when crew got difficulty for cover the place of the place that was expected interested.

However for journalists that incident would not matter that often has been experienced during covered anything and anyplaces.

Nila was not happy, because did not have habit as journalist, then she repaid to write it.
Journalist will not do that.

Nila wrote : “Being a PR myself, I couldn’t believe how the Malaysia Tourism Board didn’t understand what the media needed”

How come as a PR consultant she can not think clearly.
Necessarily she knew, “comitment” between two coorporate that was co-operating, if having the problem could be completed together.
And not for public.
Bad PR for herself and her office “MAVERICK’S”.

Very important from all.
this incident was begun resulting from the staff’s mistake Malaysian Tourism Board that was Indonesian, and did not have the experience in Malay.

Then.. is there anybody asked 90 journalist that was invited also to Malay?
Is there they complain like Nila?
So?

Fatima

ok maybe you right about your statement about nila. but the BIG problem is your minister said that “all blogger are liars and most women is unemployemnt”. Hi, i am an Indonesian journalist.

There are differences between Program Presenter and Program Producer, just like News Presenter, News Producer, and the TV Journalist in TV News Department. Nila is not a producer, not a journalist, and not involved in the actual brainstorming, planning, and journalistic execution of the program. Nila is just a presenter, and does not have the capacity to say those things, in a producer or journalist way. I think it is best for everybody to treat Nila’s opinion as an individual’s opinion, and not a “journalist’s” opinion.

I was part of the Jakarta Foreign Journalist circle, from the biggest Broadcasting Corporation in Britain, until few months ago before i “change ship” and move to Aceh for other professional challenges. I know the Jakarta Journalist Circle personnally, foreign and national journalists, and Nila was not and is not part of them.

But one thing for sure is that Nila is an Indonesian and she, just like other Indonesian, have all the right to express her opinion.

So all this comments and fuss, including from that malaysian minister, is way out of proportion. It should’ve been dealt with more caution based on more research and investigation.

    Thanks all,

    -Bim-

    @Jefri
Your point is clear… the problemm is the way the minister had responded. That’s what everyone is talking about. BTW, I would appreciate if you wouldn’t use the **** word in future :)

    @****malaysia
We do understand exactly where you are coming from… and we acknowledge that you have your own rights… in fact all of us have our rights, including that of the minister we are talking about. Obviously the minister had not exercise his right wisely by saying the wrong hurtful things at the wrong time. p/s I had to replace some words in your comment as I do not wish to create another unwanted scenario unecessarily.. let’s focus on the real issue.. and we all know what that is… :)

    @An Indonesian journalist
Well elaborated comment I have nothing to say really.

I don’t think Nila’s status is the problem here. She can be journalist, PR, “just a blogger” or even housewife.

What matter is she have written and posted her experience on her blog and since that she has lost her gig with SCTV and accused as a liar, both shouldn’t happened if MTB had professionally reacted, admitted their mistake, not being childish and responded correctly in the first place.

Indeed there were some ethical issues could be raised from what Nila had done. However, I agree with Enda..

And I dislike the minister reaction. In my opinion (which I also wrote in my blog), the reaction of your minister had succesfully shown how his department was not professional, including himself.

There were lot of better ways to respond Nila and the minister had chosen the worst.

    @Enda and @Kunderemp

Yes… I agree with both of you. The only person who doesn’t agree with all the bloggers critisms about the Minister is the Minister himself.

Its funny, the original issue raised by Nila (incompetency of MTB) had totally sunken and ignored after being swallowed by Tengku Adnan’s calling all bloggers liar.

Great to see you around :)

The point is : Customer is A King! If they are not happy or satisfied with your service, they have the rights to complain. The ‘company’(in this case : Malaysia Tourism Board) actually should be grateful to receive a complain and try to fix it so it won’t happen again!..That’s the art of marketing.
If you can’t keep up with the complaint then DON’T START A BUSINESS! as simple as that..
After all, whether Nila is a journalist or a PR or even a regular visitor, she just wasn’t happy with the service she expected!
Instead what she got is a ‘THIS?’..what a shame!is this really an attitude of ‘truly asia’?..think about it..

Ok, now we forget about the minister said first just like cjcm wanted, but in my point of view it doesn’t matter if nila is ajournalist or a presenter, or a pr but she is telling the truth about what she had experiencing in malay during her visit. If in this case nila is acting as a presenter, I know that a presenter also often have to make their script by themselves thats the fact in tv production , it’s not like what u think that a presenter already had their script just like in a movie . The tv show have already broadcast in Indonesia and she doesn’t mention about the problem that she had to experience during the show. that shows that she doing her job exelently.
I think this case proves us why the rest of journalist didn’t post their critic about MTb if they have to face the fact that they could lose their job.
i’m not telling that the rest of the journalist afraid , but is it true that just nila have this experience? or the most responsible person for this matter is some people in MTB whose laughing now and just watching their ministry make stupid statement?
and finnally , if there’s no one want to express their opinion because they are not allowed to do so, or if their opinion have to be edited before published , how can people know the truth? should we forever be treated like foolish animal that only it’s master decide what should we eat ? Can we just be a person who can face a critict with an open hearted?
    regards, b.v

Hi, i am working as a broadcast journalist in Indonesia since 2004…

I just read all the comments in this blog
and got so surprise that Nila is not a journalist.
I heard bout her and her famous blog by the time i just got back to Indonesia, after studying abroad for a year. From what i’ve heard (from some friends) i always thought that Nila is a professional journalist.. well that’s what people said. Then today, when i googled Nila, i found the issue bout she’s getting suspended from her job bcoz what she wrote at her blog.

But then this blog said that she’s a presenter..

Well i think the Minister got the same misunderstanding.. He might think that Nila is a journalist as well, that’s why he feel offended. Coz journalist is writing based on a fact and we used to cover both side and do some confirmation before we start writing.

But i strongly agree that he shouldn’t judge all d blogger as liars. Coz everyone have a right to speak they’re mind..

    Che

CJCM: Thx for dropping by… :) I guess the issue had been long been forgotten and I believe Nila Tanzil also had let the bygone be bygone.. nevertheless the lesson was learnt… one (especially a minister) has to be more careful when commenting on or more accurately critising others.
