Malaysian Government told by NUJM to recognize bloggers
National Union of Journalist of Malaysia has urged the Malaysian Government to recognize bloggers. This is something very encouraging for the Malaysia’s blogosphere. Bloggers in Malaysia, especially SOPO bloggers, have been at the loggerheads with the Government recently over what is claimed by the Government as irresponsible blogging by the online writers.
The timely call was made by Norila Mohd Daud, the president of the National Journalists Union inconjunction with the International Press Freedom Day which falls tomorrow.
“The usage of internet and the concept of the uncensored `borderless world’ have made information more easily accessible to anyone. As such, any abuses committed by public officials can be immediately exposed on the internet,”
“In view of this latest development, NUJM feels that the government should accord greater freedom to the local media by amending restrictive laws such as the Printing Presses and Publications Act, and Official Secret Act (OSA),” she said.
