Indelible ink check: Don’t be overly happy yet
I thought I was dreaming when I read the Malaysiakini’s report about Election Commission’s willingness to use the indelible ink to prevent multiple voting, a proposal that had long been demanded by opposition parties.
“In principle, yes, the commission has agreed to the proposal pending further research on two issues,” EC chairperson Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman told Malaysiakini this afternoon.
If implemented, this measure will certainly give a big confidence boost to all parties… the present BN Government, the EC as well as the opposition parties.
The public’s perception towards the Government and EC would definitely improve, which might translate to even bigger support towards the present administration.
The opposition parties will definitely have more confidence facing the elections as the indelible ink method is one of the most effective to prevent multiple voting. It is also very cost effective to implement.
Now the question is, will the present BN Government and the EC have the will power to implement the agreed proposed solution as soon as the coming general election?
The two issues are whether there is a need to amend the relevant legislation such as the Election (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981 and the material (ink) to be used in implementing the proposal.
