Higher fuel prices a burden to you even if you do not own motor vehicles

by CJCM on June 4th, 2008

Starting from midnight tonight, Malaysians will be paying RM RM2.70 and RM2.58 for a litre of petrol and diesel respectively. That is a 40% for petrol and 64% increase each for diesel. The government is proud to say that the money saved from the reduction in the subsidy is returned back to the people via the RM625 per year cash rebate for cars and RM150 for motorbikes.

According to Khoo Kay Peng, independent political analyst:

The RM625 rebate is definitely insufficient. That’s only worth about three months of fuel and we’re talking about a 60 percent increase of fuel hike. There is a lack of planning by the government.

Now…. what if you don’t own any motor vehicles? What do you get? The way I see it, you, who own no cars or motorbikes will get nothing.

On the contrary… you have to fork out more money just to mantain your present lifestyles. With the fuel prices going up and electricity tariff to follow next, we are definitely facing the prospects of higher prices of consumer goods waiting to greet all of us in the very near future.

And if the government is saying they will have mechanisms to control the prices of controlled items…. think again. The government has failed to control price increase umpteen times before and what makes you think they will succeed this time? To add salt to injuries, Sharir Samad in an interview by a television station just now said the fuel price increase should have no effect on the prices of essential items because the subsidies for food items are not taken away. Hogwash!!

Does the transportation companies vehicle runs on cow dung!!. Guess they don’t feel the pinch unlike the lower income people. Why not the menteri’s take a pay cut as well to say the rakyat money!!
