The Kuala Lumpur Traveler

Eye On Malaysia continues to draw criticism

by CJCM on January 7th, 2008

Eye on Malaysia at Titiwangsa Lake GardenIt was meant to be a positive contribution for Kuala Lumpur tourism, but Eye On Malaysia is generating something of completely opposite and negative impacts. But don’t blame tourists or the Kuala Lumpur folks for that.

Malaysiakini reported before that the 2007 Visit Malaysia Year Kuala Lumpur tourist attraction located at the Taman Tasik Titiwangsa had been a losing business proposition for the tour operator and the Government was bailing them out.

The Government of course denied the claim by Malaysiakini and just recently the Ministry of Tourism had announced that the huge structure will remain until 31st August 2008, inline with the extension of Visit Malaysia Year until the same date. The announcement had drawn criticisms from tourists and even tour operators.

“Promotion has not been consistent. In the beginning, it was very good but towards the end of (last) year, it was rather slow,” she said, referring to free tickets distributed to travel agencies and which had became a subject of debate in Parliament last year.

She pointed out that some tourists, especially locals, have been put off by the ticket price, while there are no other attractions for tourists at the location.

“More tourism activities should be organised at the area so that we (tour operators) can promote (the wheel) and bring more tourists there,” she said.

Her sentiments were shared by Jesse Lee, executive committee member of the Kuala Lumpur Tourist Guides Association, who said the wheel should only be retained if necessary changes are made.

“The place is not comfortable for tourists, as the weather (in Kuala Lumpur) is very warm,” he said, also noting that tourists generally have high expectations.

“The staff need to be friendlier. I know they try their best, but the frontline staff need to improve their English and the way they speak to customers,” he explained.

He also noted that the 60m-high wheel makes a good observation point for tourists to take pictures of the city, but that the tinted glass of the gondolas prevent this.

Local folks had also claimed the tickets are too expensive for average locals. The surrounding residents had also complaint that the huge wheel also contribubte to disturbance of the peace, traffic congestion, parking problems, pollution and cleanliness issues.

The residents are looking into taking legal action against MST Ad Suria, City Hall and the ministry. A lawyer representing the residents was quoted as saying that they “will now seriously look at what they can get from the courts and possibly file a suit soon”.
