David Beckham and Malaysian Soccer

by CJCM on January 12th, 2007

Oh my.... USD 50 million a year?I just finished watching the news on television and the hot news in sport today is about David Beckham who was reported to be joining a United State’s club, LA Galaxy, for a whopping USD250 million over a five-year contract, or USD 50 million per year making him the highest paid sportman in the United State. Looking at how soccer had developed in America, I would say United State would emerge as one of the respected soccer teams in just a few short years to come, perhaps entering another World Cup Final again and possibly end up in the final.

As for Malaysia, I must say soccer had been a nightmare. Malaysian soccer team, players and officials included, had brought disgrace after disgrace upon Malaysian despite millions of ringgit had been spent by the government on the sport. Soccer fans are fed-up with Malaysian Team. I am disgusted too. The team even loose to Vietnam, a nation that had been fighting war more than playing soccer since donkey years. Ironically, when Malaysian soccer fans do not support the national team, they were making excuses how could they win without fan’s support? But how could the fan endure the shame when the team lose most of their matches even to unknown teams?

Just take a look at the Fifa World Ranking. Malaysia is ranked 151 as of Dec 2006. At number 145 is Sri Lanka. Why I picked Sri Lanka for comparison?

Because I was in Sri Lanka for one year just about one and a half year ago. There were hardly anyone playing soccer in Colombo. Sri Lanka is a cricket nation. And Sri Lankan are fanatic cricket fans giving everything they have to their heroes. Why? Because the team keep winning.. not all the time but they beat other world cricket teams although they seems to having trouble winning against Australia at times. :)

Imagine, if Malaysia sent a cricket team to Sri Lanka and beat the heck out of Sri Lankan team. Knowing Sri Lankan cricket fans, I think it would be big riot in Colombo. The point is, Sri Lanka is world class cricket nation and loosing to Malaysian cricket team must be a joke if not an insult to Sri Lankan intelligence.

Now put yourself into Malaysian soccer fans. How would you react when Malaysian team lose to a team like Vietnam? Do you think the fan would have faith in them? Sorry to say but I have lost faith in Malaysian soccer team. I don’t know what will it take to bring back the glory, but Malaysian soccer team had to prove they are real fighters. When you prove that your are a bunch of real soccer fighters, loosing games don’t matter anymore. But looking at how they fight in the matches, the Malaysian teams are taking it laying down… if you know what I mean.

Just my two cents…. as opposed to Beckham’s USD 50 million… but money is not my motive, Beckham was quoted as saying. I don’t believe him :)
