1 million devotees at Batu Caves: Samy Vellu must be kidding…. to himself.

The first time I saw Samy Vellu trying very hard to appear full of confidence (on national TV of course) when he announced that there were more than 1 million devotees at the Batu Caves Temples on Thaipusam day, I could not help but just burst out laughing. I woke up quite late yesterday (thanks to Pak Lah for declaring a public holiday in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya… errr sorry…. should I thank Hindraf instead?), and when I turned on the TV, it was just nice that the TV guy was interviewing him right there at Batu Caves. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who was greeted by a thunderous standing ovation when he appeared, announced in his speech later that a public holiday will be declared for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya for the Thaipusam festival.

Chinese New Year 2007 celebration in Malaysia

Chinese New Year 2007 celebration in Malaysia

Personally, I don’t think Chinese New Year (CNY) in Malaysia is as exciting as it is celebrated elsewhere in the world. The reason? No firecrackers! Firecrackers used to be part and parcel of CNY celebration in Malaysia but many years back the government had banned firecrackers for security reasons. Too many casualties were caused by the firecrackers. The rest, as they say, is history. However, don’t be surprised if you come across someone selling firerackers and fireworks illegally in Malaysia.
CNY celebrations in Malaysia are now more of shopping mall affairs with lots of discounts offered, family re-unions, open house, Yee …read more
