September 4th 2007. Paya Berembang looked like a battle zone. The local authority went there with an army of police personnels, FRU personnels complete with six water cannon trucks not to mention six excavators. Their mission was to get rid of thousands of pigs and close the farm that had been the source of environmental problem for a long time.

IWK the biggest polluter in Peninsular Malaysia

I read today’s Star newspaper with shock. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid had revealed that Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) is the biggest polluter in Peninsular Malaysia.
The following excerpt is from IWK’s website:
Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd, a national sewerage company, wholly-owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated, is responsible for providing sewerage services, operating and maintaining over 9,100 public sewage treatment plants, 16,000km networks of sewerage pipelines and providing scheduled desludging services to over 350,000 individual septic tanks in Malaysia since April 1994.
