By DERRICK VINESH
PENANG: No action will be taken against teachers who do not attend official functions organised by the new state government.
National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) Penang branch Lim Ming Tzong @ Adam Alim Abdullah said teachers in Penang no longer needed to give explanation letters for failing to attend such functions.
He said the teachers were granted the “flexibility” since the state was no longer under the Barisan Nasional rule.
“A senior state Education Department official recently told school heads at a briefing that attendance was immaterial.

School fees: The first new year surprise for parents

School fees: The first new year surprise for parents

By now, millions of parents would have paid hundreds of millions to their children respective schools when they went to register their children for the 2008 new school term. Prior to this, the Government had announced free text books for all chool children and also the abolishment of school fees, and had been very proud of its move.
I do agree that the free text books given by the Government does help to lessen the financial burden for parents especially those in the lower and middle income brackets with many school going children.

Free education in Malaysia?

Free education in Malaysia?

The end-of -year school holiday had started…. but the new school term is fast approaching. The present Malaysian government had, in its latest budget, announced free text-books for all students from next year, and in doing so, proudly told the public, the education in Malaysia is now FREE. Quite to the controrary, the education will cost even more next year for Malaysian parents. I am sure, I will have to spend at least RM3000 early next …read more

Status quo remains for Science and Mathematics in English: Didn’t we tell you it wouldn’t work Ministry of Education?

All of us Malaysian know, the decision taken by the Ministry of Education to teach Science and Mathematics in English was in fact done in a hasty way and without any solid evidence that a thorough study was conducted before the policy was implemented. Teachers, parents and concerned citizens raised their concerns to the Ministry of Education but it fell on deaf ears of our ’smart’ politicians and policy-makers, who went ahead anyway with the idea of teaching the two most critical subjects not using our mother tounge language.

UM secret survey that is not anonymous

People normally would not respond to any survey that are not anonymous for many reasons which I would not want to discuss here. But have you come across any survey that are not anonymous? I haven’t… until I read today’s Malaysiakini report about UM’s supposedly secret survery but not anonymous. According to the report, the survey requires the students to fill in their personal details, parents’ names, occupation and monthly earnings… all of these information are already in the university’s computer system database.
What is interesting is the highly political nature of the survey. Within the context of prevailing Malaysian higher …read more
