Al-Zain: Halal organic chicken by Dr Mohamad Zainol

Al-Zain’s halal organic chicken outletI first knew about this locally produced halal organic chicken from a Majalah 3 show a few months ago and had been a regular customer of this halal product.

The next day, I went to the outlet which is located in Taman Nirwana and there were long queue at the shop to buy the chicken. Dr Zainol also mentioned that there were about 200 people at his farm the same morning…. all were eager to find out what is this halal organic chicken is all about.

Halal organic chickenDr Zainol’s halal organic chicken (also known as ayam kampung in Malay or free range chicken) is special in many ways.

Al-Zain’s organic chicken are not only bred and raised without any chemicals, antibiotic, growth hormon or animal-based protein which are prohibitied by Islam, but they are also given habbatus sauda (black seed) as part of their daily dietary. At this point, there is no other commercially bred poultry I know are fed with habatus sauda although there could be other breeders following suit in the future.

I really like the taste of the cooked organic chicken, maybe due to the special dietary given. And I can vouch here that the chicken is almost 100% fat free… which is very good for health. With Al-Zain halal organic chicken, you get a really high quality product that is guaranteed to be processed 100% according to shariah requirements… and it is free from any chemicals which could pose health hazard to you and family in the long term.

At around RM16 per bird, it is a little bit expensive but if you are concern about long term health and want to make sure your chicken are absolutely halal in the way it is produced processed, it is defintely a good buy because free range chicken offered at normal wet markets are also about the same price if not more expensive.

You can of course order the chicken from Dr Zainol outlet and have it delivered to your house by his increasing network of dealers. Just ask him for nearest stockist near your place and you can order from them directly next time.

For your information, I just had my dinner with Al-Zain’s fried organic chicken and it was so yummy… you should try.

    Salam Cik Nima,
Yg kita keluarkan ayam kampung organik. Harga akan nampak tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan ayam daging biasa. Biasanya ayam organik sahaja dijual dgn harga RM25 seekor. Ayam kpg pula dlm RM9-10 sekilo. Jika perbandingan yg betul dibuat, saudari akan dapati harga ayam azzain adalah sangat berpatutan.

Flyers dijual dengan harga 10sen sekeping sahaja.

    Terima kasih.

    Hi,
I am from Singapore wanting to import halal and organic chicken and am happy to come across this product mentioned in a few blogs.

Only one thing is that I think many of you have misquoted with a statement about pig enzyme being used in chicken which is not true. We should not scare people unnecessarily since a good product need not use scare techniques.

The enzyme used is phytase which breaks down phytate from grains and seeds which chickens cannot digest. Phytase is only produced by ruminants like cows and goats.

Animals with one stomach like humans, chickens, dogs, pigs, etc. cannot produce phytase, so monograstic animals cannot be used to produce the enzyme for digesting phytate.

    Regards

    Craig Abdullah

    Dear Brother

The ordinary people call it pig enzyme, but it is hydrolyzed pig protein.

Please surf the net for a book call Not On The Label written by a famous instigative author. She and BBC made a stunning discovery on how the chickens are fed with hydrolyzed protein to Fasten their growth . In a lab analysis in Manchester after much complaint from consumers it was proven that chicken in the UK contains 55% pig properties in the DNA test.

Please read this book and the findings you will shocked. So its not misquote it’s the happening in the industry and this author has fought for the consumer rights of the Muslim.

Hope with your expertise you will do more to educate the Muslim consumers.

    Salam,

Thank you for clarifying my error.

Hydrolised protein normally is used in the manufacture of burgers, nuggets, fish cakes, sausages, etc. The purpose is to add bulk (make it look bigger) to the product, and to retain water so the product don’t become dry.

The use of hydrolised protein is done by food processors, not farmers since you cannot inject hydrolised protein into live chickens. It is also pointless to feed the chickens hydrolised protein because of the cost-benefit. You do it to whole dressed chickens or to chicken parts or to processed chicken meat like nuggets, etc. The purpose is to add water into the chicken or meat, and the hydrolised protein to hold the water so it does not come out. That way, you can sell the chicken for a higher price because of the extra water inside. This is done also to fish ball and products like that. If the hydrolised protein comes from beef or pork, then you will likely find beef or pork DNA inside the chicken meat or fish ball or fish paste or beef sausage, etc. Since chicken is one of the cheapest meats, chances are you will find chicken DNA in beef sausages, burgers, fish balls, etc. Halal certifying bodies are aware of the use of hydrolised protein in food processing and are very strict about the sources of such products. Some allow only hydrolised proteins from vegetable sources. I believe Jakim is one of those bodies that insist that hydrolised protein must be plant in origin.

Some factory chickens (ayam daging) in Malaysia and Singapore can have up to 15% water. Most processors use chemicals to hold the water inside the chicken because it is cheaper. The same is true for certain seafood like scallops, etc. That is why most time when you roast a factory chicken, you would lose more weight than a real chicken like dr. Zainol’s.

It is easy to differentiate a real chicken and a treated chicken: the meat of the treated chicken is soft and mushy. If you slice out the treated breast meat and you smooth it with the flat of your chopper, it will become smooth like jellyfish. The normal chicken is solid and have fibre. Normally, such treated meat is used in burgers to give that tender, juicy bite.

The color is also different, it does not have the color of real chicken meat with haemoglobin, myoglobin and all. The treated chicken color is pale like fish ball paste.

You can also tell the real free-range chicken from the chicken that is not. You look at the thigh meat. The thigh meat of a free-range chicken will be darker. However, you must compare with the same breed. For example, you compare an ayam kampung with an ayam kampung, not an ayam kampung with a broiler. The free-range chicken will have more myoglobin and this results in a darker color meat.

    Regards

    Craig Abdullah

    Good explanation by Craig Abdullah

You have point on every single of your sentences. But it’s to much clarifying terms in organic or process of the chicken. So from your point what is the findings and conclusion about this?

  37. Craig Abdullah
    July 24th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

    Hafeez

    Thank you for asking.

We tend to believe people who hold high positions and who have titles or qualifications.

For example, if a high government person were to say that an accused person need to ‘update’ his DNA profile with fresh DNA if he has nothing to hide, we tend to agree with him. We tend to agree maybe the accused person has something to hide.

My point is that we should be more critical and we should check all claims carefully.

The ummah must always try to get the latest up-to-date information and facts from any source, even from Jews if need be, to advance ourselves and to prevent us from being made fools of. That is why I explain in detail about enzyme and hydrolised protein.

Just because a chicken seller has a Doctorate in front of his name does not make him more credible because the fact remains that he is a chicken seller and wants to sell his chickens. Let’s check his claims critically and see if they stack up. Let us not make a decision based on emotions and sentiments, or fears. Let us get the right facts and then make our decisions.

If we check up on the example above about the DNA, from our doctor for example, we would have found out that once a DNA profile is done, it is a permanent record. Just like a fingerprint. Our DNA will not change with age. Thus, if 10 years later I am accused of say, sodomy, all you need to do is find some DNA from the body of the victim which does not belong to the victim, and then match them with my DNA profile. If there’s a match, habis cerita. No need for fresh DNA.

Remember as Muslims it is our duty to deny evil ( nahi mungkar ). There are very few deeds as evil as usurping justice for one’s own ends or to deny justice by planting evidence and changing facts to cloud the truth. Doing evil to me is worse than committing a sin (dosa).

I want to import free-range organic halal chicken into Singapore. I want the best and I check every claim carefully for the past three months. I now know every single organic chicken in Malaysia, which is halal, which is truly organic.

For me, to make use of false claims, especially by making use of religion to support such claims is mungkar and must be exposed. It is mungkar to use the love for Islam by the ummah to sell products. I ask those who are doing so to repent and cease or risk exposure.

    Wassalam

    Craig Abdullah

    assalamulaikum,
sekarag dah ada Ayam Organik HPA, Adakah ayam HPA ni sama dgn Azzain. Katanya HPA ternak sendiri tapi mana dulu dengan Dr.Zainol punya produk? Siapa tiru siapa?

CJCM: Nima, x kisah lah sapa tiru sapa…. yg penting ade pilihan buat pengguna :)

  42. Craig Abdullah
    September 24th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

    Cik Nima Mohd.,
    SS,
Is HPA organic? To be organic one must follow International rules, not own rules. Just like Halal, we cannot have our own rules what is halal, what is not.

Here are some of the International rules. If HPA breaks one, then it is not organic.
    1. Chickens must be free-range. Is HPA free-range?
    2. The houses cannot be sprayed with chemical disinfectants. How do HPA keep their houses germ-free?
    3. Cannot be fed fishmeal. This is due to high usage of toxic preservatives and fungicides. Also fishmeal is a source of salmonella germs. In HPA’s website they state they feed fishmeal to their chickens. Just this one statement means they are not organic.
    4. Sources of protein and carbohydrates. Forget about the herbs etc. Chickens cannot grow fed herbs alone. Chickens need protein and carbohydrates to grow to juicy meat. Where do they get the protein and carbo from? From soya and corn? If soya and corn and it is not certified organic, then it is GMO as ALL soya and corn in Msia is GMO. If GMO then the chicken is NOT organic.

Just based on the above, it is clear HPA is not organic in the internationally accepted sense. However, it can claim to be antibiotic free, or raised naturally, etc.

Is the Other Guy organic? Haha.. you judge for yourself.

    Wasallam

Craig, who wants only to educate the Ummah.

“In terms of the size of the coop its 3 times bigger than normal chicken coop. thats free range enough. What does free range has anything to do with organic?”

    2. The houses cannot be sprayed with chemical disinfectants. How do HPA keep their houses germ-free?
“We dont spray with chemical disinfectants. We wash clean everyday.”

    3. Cannot be fed fishmeal. This is due to high usage of toxic preservatives and fungicides. Also fishmeal is a source of salmonella germs. In HPA’s website they state they feed fishmeal to their chickens. Just this one statement means they are not organic.
“We feed the chicken with our own organic fish.”

“We feed the them with our own ORGANIC Corn. We are against GMO.”

Just based on the above, it is clear HPA is not organic in the internationally accepted sense. However, it can claim to be antibiotic free, or raised naturally, etc.

“Based onYOUR assumptions Not on the truth.”

Is the Other Guy organic? Haha.. you judge for yourself.
    Wasallam
Craig, who wants only to educate the Ummah.

“Thats not where you are coming from. Educating is not by accusing”.

    Cik Nima Mohd.,
You asked: But Dr.Zainol’s product are fully organic, Is he Mr Craig?

No, Dr. Zainol’s chicken, beef and mutton are NOT organic.

HPA’s chickens are not organic but Natural. It is a good chicken, better than Dr. Zainol’s but not organic.

For a good chicken, at reasonable price, try:
    http://www.bidong-valley.com

Good organic chickens are more expensive and not meant for mass market. Bidong Valley is priced for most people here and is a better chicken than HPA and Dr. Zainol.

    Craig
I am going to buy organic fish from HPA since they must be so cheap to feed their chickens, hahaha.

    Cik Nima and others,
To read more about what is organic and what is not, there is a lot of information at this website: http://www.dqcleanchicken.com
Unfortunately, their production is very small quantities and their price is very high.
I was surprised to find out that they have been doing organic chicken since 2001 and that the company behind the whole operation, Bestari Bersatu Sdn. Bhd., is a 100% Malay muslim company.

    Bismillah,

    Cik Nima (presumably),

To recap, I was asked my personal opinion and I gave my personal opinion.

I tried to see Dr. Zainol but was not successful. After much effort I was brought to the location of the farm at a place called Sungai Lui. It is totally abandoned. There were signs that once there were animal sheds, but they have all been torn down. I was told by one of his former feed suppliers that he is now buying from contract farmers, but I could not get to visit any of the contract farms. It is all very secretive.

In the case of HPA they are more transparent, so much so that one can see that they are NOT practising all the internationally understood and internationally accepted organic methods. It is clearly a case of HPA not fully understanding the full meaning of organic farming. However, because of their transparency, one can safely assume their chicken is a better chicken than Dr. Zainol’s which are bought from ‘contract’ farmers who are largely unknown to the consumer. We are buying because we thought Dr. Zainol raised them himself. He is not. He is buying from others.

Bidong Valley is very transparent and tells you everything about how they raise their chickens. When you visit their website you can see that they are really raising the chickens themselves and how they raise them. Everything is clear.
Most important is the fact that their chicken reach 1.3kg in 70 days. This is a real ayam kampung. One of Dr. Zainol’s associates told me proudly that his chickens reach 2kg in 70 days. That is not a good chicken for our health.

My intentions are sincere since people’s health and people’s money are involved.

    Wasallam

    Craig

    Assalamualaikum

    Terima kasih.

CJCM: Terima kasih kerana berkongsi pengalaman.

In response to Craig Abdullah, I agree that being a Muslim company, HPA should be more transparent with their products. I once was interested to purchase a HPA product, but I could not get much ingredients info. I emailed one of the HPA people last year but did not get any reply at all until now.

So I just lose interest on HPA and even though it’s a certified halal brand but I don’t think it’s really halal-atthoyyibah as it may contain synthetic preservatives et al. I’m the type of consumer who read ingredient labels and would only buy products with properly listed ingredients on its labels. As a principle, I’m the type of person who do not use any kind of products with synthetic preservatives, colorings, flavorings etc…I even make my own cosmetics…

I noticed that many Muslim halal-companies in Malaysia like to mislead users by advertising their products (especially cosmetic and personal care products) as 100% natural but when I look through the ingredient list on the labels, I’ll see toxic ingredients like TEA, DEA, Mineral Oils, Parabens, SLS, FD&C dyes, sythetic fragrance cropping out…Maybe because some of these products are private-labeled products and the ‘halal producers’ are just too ignorant of consumer safety. Please provide me some light on this…

The label ‘halal’ itself does not necessarily means the product is good and healthier. Tell me what’s the difference between a halal-certified toothpaste that contains SLS, parabens, articial flavorings and colors with a non-certified halal brand that is really 100% natural, its origins clearly stated and made only with totally safe and vegetable-derived ingredients? I’d go for the latter bcoz as a consumer, I know that the product is halal without doubts and healthier for me.

I hope that all halal businesses in Malaysia practices:

    1. Truth-in-Labeling and;
    2. Avoid putting too much/or not at all synthetic fillers and chemical additives into their ‘natural’ products
    3. Be more ethical and responsible in advertising and promoting their products
    4. Learn how to comply to international standards
