AirAsia new joint venture in Vietnam: The rich just get richer

by CJCM on September 2nd, 2007

Tony Fernandez announces new venture in Vietnam to form Vina AirAsiaI was wondering what else would be Tony Fernandez’s low budget business ideas after he had launched the world’s first budget hotel in an international airport recently. Here you go guys. Barely 3 weeks after the Tune Hotel’s announcement, the rich budget carrier smart guy has announced his new plan that will make him richer…. a lot more rich. With 84-million Vietnamese population that would be his potential customers…. soon everyone in Vietnam can fly…. and Tony will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Southeast Asia’s largest low cost carrier AirAsia will launch a new budget airline in Vietnam, officials said Friday, and hinted at more joint ventures in the region.

Chief Executive Tony Fernandes also told AFP that the Malaysian company will order 25 new A320 Airbus aircraft to cope with the increasing passengers and routes.

AirAsia, which on Thursday posted a 41.5 percent rise in fourth quarter profits, will team up with the state-owned Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) to form Vina AirAsia in a 30-million-dollar deal.

“We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Vinashin today (Friday) to form Vina AirAsia,” Fernandes said.

“Vietnam, with a pro-business leadership and a 84-million population, is a fertile place for AirAsia to expand its business. We are seeing a tourism boom and we want to be part of it,” he added.

The CEO also said there will be a new order for another 25 brand spanking new Airbus A320s. AirAsia started their operations with 28 Boeing 737s. Compare that to MAS’s new budget airline Firefly that is using the antique Fokker propeller-based aircrafts.
