1,000,000 seats at RM0.00 from Malaysia Airlines

MAS zero fares for 1 million seatsUnbelieveable…. that’s all I can say. If you think AirAsia is cheap for low cost travel, MAS is even cheaper. No it is not cheaper…. it is simply give-aways. MAS is offering 1 million seats at RM0.00 (local destinations only) with lots of Terms and Conditions to comply though.

You have to book between 5th-9th May 2008 and travel between 10th June 2008 and 14th December 2008 with lots of blackout dates in between. Please click here or on the image for details.

It’s interesting to see what AirAsia will come up with in the face of this latest onslaught by MAS. Low cost travel is definitely getting better in Malaysia… provided MAS does not go broke again after this give-aways.

Something to ponder: Didn’t MAS previously say domestic flights are not profitable and that its international flights are subsidizing local flights? What is then the rationale for offering 1,000,000 seats at RM0.00? Anyone care to share?

If I had to guess, I would suggest that maybe it’s a desperation move to drum up more interest in the local routes between cities within Malaysia.

Canada has the same problem, although over the years some of the bigger connections (Toronto-Ottawa, Toronto-Montreal, Calgary-Edmonton etc.) have been thoroughly marketed to the point where they have shown a profit. This might be some of the same.

Of course, I have zero marketing experience, so take anything I say with a grain of salt =D

CJCM: Hmmm.. interesting point. But the problem is, the domestic destinations were always claimed not profitable even when the were selling at full fares. So how could selling them at zero costs be profitble? There must some more logical explanations to this.

simple logic. the seat sold at this price are the normally unsold seats during non peak season. it’s like all the major department store sales — selling stock — like stock clearance.
