PKFZ woes: Only Shahrir Samad has guts to speak up?
I have been patiently waiting to watch and see who from the present UMNO-lead Government dare enough to open his/her big mouth and make noise about yet another mismanagement of public fund with regards to Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ). But as expected, none is forthcoming as if what happened in the PKFZ fiasco is no big deal.
Malaysiakini report today however shows there is still a man brave enough within the BN Government who is dare enough to speak up.
Vocal member of Parliament Shahrir Samad today said the authorities must investigate for possible corruption involving the country’s troubled port operator which has piled up over a billion ringgit in debts.
As the extent of Port Klang’s debt problems filters out in the local financial press, there has also been widespread speculation of a possible bailout from the government of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
The bailout, if pushed through, could become the biggest in Malaysia’s history, said Shahrir, chairperson of government’s powerful Public Accounts Committee.
However to be honest, that is just what is expected of Shahrir as he is, for God sake, the Chairperson of Public Account Committee. The question remains, will Pak Lah listen to him?
The issue remains “politically sensitive,” Shahrir said, noting that the premier has repeatedly pledged transparency in all government dealings.
The prime minister, who is widely expected to call for general elections next year, has kept silent on the issue.

A deafening silence indeed……

speak up is one thing..follow up is another…and Shahrir was sent packing by Samy vellu for speaking up on the MRR repairs..and after that all quiet..
Pardon my cynicism..he is from the ruling party and if things get hot, he will asked to shut up. Sharir may be eminently suitable for the job….but will his colleagues let him do the job.?
CJCM: Your cynicism is understandable…
But Shahrir seems to be the one and only couraged enough to go against the tide within UMNO… the Malaysia’s only hope for any one to speak up from within the government. The others of course wont let him do it…. that is written all over the wall already just by looking at what happen previously. But there is always hope with Shahrir…. God willing.
