MyKad lucky draw that’s not so lucky for Malaysian
August 2005, the then Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid had launched a campaign as an incentive to encourage Malaysians to change their old identity cards to the new MyKad. The campaign was in the form of lucky draws that promised among other prizes a MyVi car, worth RM50,000 manufactured by a local car maker Perodua. The public was made to understand that the prizes for the lucky draw would not cost the government any money because it was supposed to be sponsored by the consortium that supply MyKad.
The lucky draws would not cost the government as the prizes were sponsored by a consortium of companies that supplied MyKads’ hardware and software, he said.
Azmi said the lucky draws were aimed at encouraging the people to apply for MyKads early and to avert congestion at the registration counters when people came to apply for MyKads at the last minute.
Well that was then.
Today, Home Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad had different opinion and had revoked the lucky draw scheme that was introduced by his own government.
When asked if it was appropriate to withdraw the lucky draw now, he further said:
“That was the former minister. Now I am saying, get rid of this mentality that Malaysians need to be offered something just to change to MyKad.
“Come on, this is just a MyVi. We are not offering a Mercedes-Benz or a Rolls Royce.
“We don’t live in a world where you must have lucky draws, then people will come. That is rubbish.”
Sadly to say, I think the new Home MInister is not doing the right thing. It’s not the Malaysian citizens that asked for it. It was an incentive scheme mooted by someone in the government then. The issue here is not whether it’s a MyVi or Rolls Royce or Malaysians had to be enticed to change their identity cards. It’s about honouring what the government had promised to the people. Period.
If Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad stand as candidate in the next election, would you believe what he promises and/or vote for him?

I think there is a always a bigger draw for people to switch to a new standard if there is some chance of instant gratification. For instance, a local health insurer here in Chattanooga is encouraging it’s members to switch to paperless EOBs. If they do, then they are entered into a drawing for a hybrid car.
Too bad your Home Minister didn’t think the same way. Someone probably could have used that car. I know I could use a new one.
Alli,
The latest news was that the former Home Minister had in fact withdrawn the lucky draw and had FORGOTTEN to inform the new minister… and the public obviously…. which I think is a CRAP. There has to be something fishy there but who knows what.
They hate each other from ages ago and Radzi just waiting for a chance to give a swing, but at the Malaysian public expense. What a selfish act.
Nisa, well I can’t really verify that they hate each other ages ago as claimed by you… whatever it is, there was clearly something not right the way the event had unfolded.
