1 million devotees at Batu Caves: Samy Vellu must be kidding…. to himself.
The first time I saw Samy Vellu trying very hard to appear full of confidence (on national TV of course) when he announced that there were more than 1 million devotees at the Batu Caves Temples on Thaipusam day, I could not help but just burst out laughing. I woke up quite late yesterday (thanks to Pak Lah for declaring a public holiday in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya… errr sorry…. should I thank Hindraf instead?), and when I turned on the TV, it was just nice that the TV guy was interviewing him right there at Batu Caves. In the background, I, or anyone watching the TV for that matter, could clearly see there was so much less people at the famous temple… and yet this guy was telling the whole nation there were 1 miillion Hindu devotees.
To add salt to Samy’s injury, Malaysiakini reported Hindu devotees boycott Batu Caves, the fact that was backed by the some visitors to Batu Caves temples, stall owners and all other medias, save of course some main stream media that are well known for twisting and spinning real stories for ‘you know who’.
Thaipusam festivities at the Batu Caves Temple in Kuala Lumpur have been somewhat lackluster this year, marred by a below-average turnout believed to be attributed to an apparent boycott campaign.
……..
One seasoned visitor, businessman S Babu, 32, said he was at the temple at 6am this morning and was surprised by the lack of congestion at the temple.
“Previous years, we can’t even walk. This morning however, it was as easy as an evening stroll,” said Babu.
…..
Several stallholders and devotees lamented the small turnout and said ethnic Indians should work together to promote their cause.
“The crowd is normally double or triple this size. Now it’s so small, so there is not so much of a great mood this time,” said N Kumaran, 41, a civil servant who has taken part in the festival for the past 14 years.
Sweet seller Joga Singh said that with the crowds so thin he and other vendors were not making any money this year.

Like me, I think the whole Indian community in Malaysia must be having good laughs on Samy Vellu as well. And who knows, Samy Vellu and associates also were quietly having one hell of a good laugh themselves after the interview…. while the whole world is watching what has become of Malaysian politicians.

And how did the temple official spin out the lack of stalls being taken up: “We have reduced the numbers so that the public can have more walking space” What about Samy? To maintain his pride said “’I have come to Thaipusam since I was 11 years old. I know the crowd. It is the SAME as before,’ he told reporters at Batu Caves. So what can we say except that he is completely out of touch with the reality of the any situation including the marginalization of the majority of the Indian community? So how can he continue to fight for their rights when he seems to be totally unaware of what is going on? In fact NST reported of wasted food confirms the foreign & local experts who can gauge more accurately the turnout at Batu Caves on, before and after Thaipusam day.

When you have to multiply half value by two
You’ll have to believe me through and through
Even though everyone can see the truth too
We all know how important some numbers are even when not true
